Overview
The John F Hunt team successfully navigated a challenging project divided between three separate locations, with sites situated immediately adjacent to live LUL assets which required protection throughout our works.
Relevant Experience
The Crossrail project was split between Moorfields, Moorgate and Blomfield Street, where we undertook the project directly for Crossrail as the principal contractor and were responsible for constant liaison with London Underground, Network Rail, and the City of London.
The demolished buildings were six to seven storey commercial offices, with demolition carried out on a floor-by-floor basis using seven ton excavators with specialist attachments to reduce noise whilst breaking through heavy reinforced concrete.
Moorgate
Works in Moorgate included demolition of the office building directly above the live station ticket hall. We designed and built a full protection deck over the area to ensure public safety whilst it remained fully operational throughout works. Extensive asbestos was identified in insulative coatings to steelwork, and removal was carried out over a 24/7 split-shift to maintain the project’s programme. Steelwork insulated in 50mm of sprayed asbestos was found, as was the station’s supporting steelwork – 4 x 100m beams each of 2.5m high and all ancillary steelwork. The sprayed coating was removed under fully controlled conditions in individually constructed enclosures.
Blomfield Street
We demolished an office building at Blomfield Street, located adjacent to an above-ground section of the Metropolitan, Circle and Hammersmith and City railway lines, for which we designed and installed a protection deck to protect the railway assets. Due to the confined site footprint, all materials were discharged internally, with a conveyor system removing them from the basement level to the first-floor disposal gantry on Blomfield Street.
Moorfields
Our team carried out the works at Moorfields, which encompassed floor-by-floor demolition using minimally percussive methods to avoid movement. The Metropolitan Line underground tunnel ran directly beneath the basement slab, and real-time movement monitoring and preapproved methodology ensured all LUL assets remained protected throughout.
