Overview

The Barking Riverside Extension project was designed to enable transport links to future housing developments in the area. As principal contractor for the early works, John F Hunt successfully transformed one of Barking Riverside’s most challenging work sites, delivering complex, high-risk rail-adjacent demolition with precision, seamless collaboration and uncompromising safety.

Relevant Experience

Positioned between an active DB Schenker rail yard and a busy Network Rail/TfL corridor, the project demanded exceptional planning and coordination from day one. Our team transformed a highly constrained, rail-side environment into a smooth, well managed operation.
The scope of works encompassed extensive asbestos and pigeon waste clearance. This was followed by the controlled demolition of a 3-storey office building, an engine shed with multiple single-storey office and workshop spaces, a single-storey drivers' mess room next to the line, and a 120m pedestrian ramp structure next to the active rail lines and overhead line equipment. Installation of the new parapet wall to the bridge was conducted.
To enable these works, we relocated critical Overhead Line Equipment (OLE), lowering and replacing 1,000 metres of OLE while maintaining full tension and operational performance across remaining sections. We also replaced three cantilever brackets with new stand-alone posts and cantilever arms, upgrading the lineside configuration and enhancing safe walking routes. All height and stagger surveys were managed in-house, ensuring absolute accuracy before and after works.
Delivered across multiple rail possessions, the programme required rigorous QRSA integration and close, ongoing collaboration with Network Rail through whiteboard planning meetings.
Despite tight possession windows and the need to coordinate with other contractors, every activity was completed within the time allotted, and our performance was recognised by TfL’s prestigious Team Recognition Award.
Protection of critical rail assets was a priority throughout. We secured full approvals (F001, F002, F003 and AIP) and delivered bespoke protective measures, including a crane-hung demolition curtain and custom-engineered polystyrene track protection. We efficiently managed all consents, access arrangements, methodology approvals, and safety provisions under the APA framework. .
Our in-house design team delivered all temporary works, complemented by real-time environmental monitoring and specialist cleaning services. The project was completed without incident, delay, or disruption, even in challenging conditions.
