Bow Shackles

Bow Shackles

Bow shackles symmetrically loaded as two leg slings having a maximum included angle of 120 degrees and can be utilised to full working load limit.

  • Never exceed 120 degrees included angle.
  • Use bolt and screw pin shackles only.
  • Diameter of shackle must be greater than wire rope diameter if no thimble is being used.
  • Shackle must be large enough to avoid pinching of synthetic slings.

It is required that the shackles are regularly inspected and that the inspection should take place in accordance with the safety standards given in the country of use. This is required because the products in use may be affected by wear, misuse, overloading etc., with a consequence of deformation and alteration of the material structure.  

Inspection should take place at least every six months and even more frequently when the shackles are used in severe operating conditions.

Body and pin fabricated in high tensile steel to BS 3032 table 3 - 1958. Self coloured or can be hot dip galvanised to prevent corrosion due to adverse weather conditions.

Green Pin Alloy Bow Shackle
Green Pin Alloy Bow Shackle

Fabricated in alloy steel the rating of shackles to EN 13889 assumes the absence of exceptionally hazardous conditions.

These include:

  • offshore activities
  • the lifting of persons
  • the lifting of potentially dangerous loads such as molten & corrosive materials.

In these cases a competent person should assess the degree of hazard and reduce the working load limit accordingly.

Temperature range of Green Pin shackles only:

  • 0 - 200 degrees = 100% of original working load limit
  • 200 - 300 degrees = 90% of original working load limit
  • 300 - 400 degrees = 70% of the original working load limit
  • > 400 degrees not allowed
