Confined Space & Recovery

Confined Space & Recovery

A number of people are killed or seriously injured in confined spaces each year in the UK. This happens in a wide range of industries, from those involving complex plant to simple storage vessels. Those killed include not only people working in the confined space but those who try to rescue them without proper training and equipment.

What is a confined space?

It can be any space of an enclosed nature where there is a risk of death or serious injury from hazardous substances or dangerous conditions (eg lack of oxygen). Some confined spaces are fairly easy to identify, eg enclosures with limited openings:

  • storage tanks
  • silos
  • reaction vessels
  • enclosed drains
  • sewers

Others may be less obvious, but can be equally dangerous, for example:

  • Open topped chambers
  • vats
  • combustion chambers in furnaces etc
  • duct work
  • un-ventilated or poorly ventilated rooms

It is not possible to provide a comprehensive list of confined spaces. Some places may become confined spaces when work is carried out, or during their construction, fabrication or subsequent modification.

Are your site personnel equipped to carry out the task?

Gas detection
Gas detection

Wherever chemical substances and hazardous substance mixtures occur, they pose a potential threat to human health and the safety of industrial facilities. Without technical aids it is almost impossible to detect fire and explosion hazards or risks of suffocating and poisoning early enough to take countermeasures.

Gas detectors have become central elements to personal protection and plant safety, detecting hazardous gas in good time and issuing warnings so that countermeasures can be initiated before damage is caused to people, plants and the environment.

Breathing Apparatus
Breathing Apparatus

When working in confined spaces the Supervisors task is to check that all protective measures have been taken and monitoring the operations with a gas detector. If there is any risk, the rescue station will take the protective equipment which has been pre-prepared, put it on the compressed air breathing apparatus and initiate the rescue.

With many different varieties of 'escape breathing apparatus' on the market today, Thameside Lifting has identified its leading partners to ensure you receive the best equipment to suit your application.

In any confined space scenario, provisions must be made to ensure that access is both provided and is safe.  More importantly, if in the event of a incident requiring assistance to remove any casualty, the Man riding Tripod and Winch is a necessity.

Rescue Stretcher
Rescue Stretcher

The original and the best solution for confined space, high angle, technical rescue and traditional land based applications, is still the stretcher. Our preferred model comes equipped for horizontal hoisting by helicopter, vertical hoisting in caves or industrial confined spaces.

When the patient is packaged, the stretcher becomes rigid. The durable plastic provides protection for the patient while allowing extrication through the most demanding confined spaces.

The stretcher is rolled for storage in a tough 'Cordura' backpack which is included, the system ships at 17 lbs and comes complete for most applications. Available in International Orange or O.D. Green for military and other tactical situations.

Related products include a 15m wire fall arrest and rescue block, scaffold hooks and karabiners.
