Among
the largest of demolition contracts carried out in London. An 18-storey
office block with multiple sides. The low-rise area was made up of a
5-storey ‘s’ block upon a podium slab with a coach park
beneath and basements and sub basements across the entire site. It was
an island site bounded by Byward Street, Lower Thames Street with the
Tower of London to the east, falling within 3 local authority areas,
with a church to the North.
The works
The Tower presented difficulties with the top floor construction, as
the top heavy trapezoidal columns required temporary steelwork in order
to remove them safely. The exterior was clad in panels that had proved
unsafe in the past, so were strapped to the load bearing structure prior
to removal enabling the podium slab to be removed effectively, safely
and quickly.
