:: Gresham Street, London
The Job
Asbestos removal and demolition of three office blocks, opposite the Guildhall
and surrounded by other office buildings.
The works
Having removed and disposed of the asbestos, the floor by floor demolition commenced.
Concurrently however, access was required for the Museum of London to investigate
basement areas, as the site was known to be of significant historic value.
Demolition complete, the main archaeological excavation had to be carefully
programmed to facilitate a complex temporary works scheme; wholesale excavation
would have undermined adjacent roads and foundation. There were three distinct
phases and as the Museum completed their work, we revisited the site to remove
old foundations and obstructions prior to handing the site to Sir Robert McAlpine
and the piling rigs.
Although the demolition was relatively conventional it was the careful liaison
and integration with the archaeologists that is particularly worthy of note.
The temporary scaffold structure offering protection to the excavation was the
largest ever erected in the city to date and covered nearly an acre.
Environment
Suppression methods were utilised to combat dust pollution and quieter concrete
crackers were used instead of noisy breakers.
Delivery of Services
Demolition was completed within the 64 week programme and within the £3,500,000
contract sum.
