Overview

Existing Structure & Location:

One of the largest of demolition contracts carried out in London.

An 18-storey office block with multiple sides. The low-rise area was made up of a 5-storey ‘s’ shaped block upon a podium slab with a coach park beneath and basements and sub basements across the entire site.

It was an island site bounded by Byward Street, Lower Thames Street with the Tower of London to the east, falling within 3 local authority areas, with a church to the North.

Scope of Works

  • The Tower presented difficulties regarding the top floor construction, as the top heavy trapezoidal columns required temporary steelwork in order to remove them safely.
  • The exterior was clad in panels that had proved unsafe in the past, so were strapped to the load bearing structure prior to removal enabling the podium slab to be removed effectively, safely and quickly.
  • The foundations were found to be five times the size originally stated on the construction drawings, but this was overcome by the correct selection of machinery.
  • The most efficient plant available was employed for this job including a super long reach machine, a fleet of 45 ton and one 56 tonne machine on heavy breakers.
  • Suppression techniques were used to assist with pollution.
  • The demolition of the various structures was completed within the 53 week programme and within the £4,000,000 contract sum.
